Medical Assistant Instructor
Job Summary:
The Division of Workforce Partnerships is seeking an experienced Medical Assistant Instructor to teach in its proprietary Medical Assistant workforce training program. The instructor will teach the full spectrum of Medical Assistant competencies, including administrative procedures, clinical procedures, laboratory skills, electronic health records, professional communication, and preparation for employment in outpatient healthcare settings.
The instructor is responsible for ensuring students develop the knowledge, technical skills, professional behaviors, and workplace readiness expected of entry-level Medical Assistants. Instruction must align with current healthcare industry standards, employer expectations, and the Rhode Island Medical Assistant scope of practice, and applicable state regulations. The Medical Assistant Instructor works collaboratively with fellow instructors, teaching assistants, program leadership, and employer partners to ensure students receive a high-quality educational experience that prepares them for employment and long-term career success.
This position is scheduled based on employer and program demand and may include day, evening, and occasional weekend hours. Instructors must communicate their availability and commit to teaching all assigned class sessions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Work collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment with adult learners representing a variety of educational backgrounds, cultures, identities, and life experiences.
Deliver engaging classroom, laboratory, and skills instruction using the approved Medical Assistant curriculum.
Teach administrative and clinical Medical Assistant competencies, including but not limited to:
Medical terminology
Anatomy and physiology
Patient communication
Electronic Health Records (EHR)
Medical office operations
Vital signs
Infection prevention and control
Specimen collection
Electrocardiography (ECG)
Immunizations
Medication administration within the Rhode Island Medical Assistant scope of practice
Clinical documentation
Professionalism and employability skills
Ensure instruction reflects current Rhode Island laws, regulations, delegation requirements, and Medical Assistant scope of practice.
Utilize a variety of instructional methods and active learning strategies to support diverse learning styles.
Deliver lesson plans and supplemental instructional materials to achieve course objectives.
Assess student knowledge and competency through laboratory and practical skills evaluations.
Maintain accurate attendance, grades, competency checklists, and student records.
Collaborate with program leadership regarding student progress, retention, and intervention strategies.
Maintain classroom and laboratory equipment while ensuring compliance with OSHA, infection prevention, and safety standards.
Maintain clean, organized, and safe instructional laboratory environments.
Participate in instructor meetings, instructor training, and professional development activities.
Model professional behavior and promote workplace readiness expected in outpatient healthcare settings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Current LPN, RN, RMA, CCMA, CMA or other appropriate healthcare license/credential in good standing with 5 years of experience in ambulatory care, primary care, specialist practice or other outpatient healthcare setting that utilizes medical assistant skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of the Rhode Island Medical Assistant scope of practice, supervision requirements, delegation guidelines, and applicable healthcare regulations.
Familiarity with outpatient clinical workflow, including patient intake, rooming procedures, provider support, clinical documentation, scheduling, and care coordination.
Working knowledge of HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA-waived testing, infection prevention and control practices, and healthcare safety standards.
Experience teaching, training, mentoring, precepting, or supervising healthcare staff or students.
Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider certification.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, virtual meeting platforms, learning management systems, and educational technology.
Ability to work effectively with students from diverse educational, cultural, and professional backgrounds.
Commitment to following the approved curriculum while adapting instructional methods to meet student learning needs.
Strong understanding of outpatient healthcare operations and team-based patient care.
Ability to teach both administrative and clinical Medical Assistant competencies.
Ability to maintain confidential student and program records.
Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with healthcare industry standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate degree in nursing, Healthcare Administration, Health Sciences, Education, or a closely related field.
Experience teaching in a workforce development, adult education, community college, career and technical education, or other workforce training programs.
Experience delivering hybrid or online instruction.
Experience supervising Medical Assistant externships or other healthcare clinical placements.
