Pharmacy Technician Program Instructor
Job Summary
The Division of Workforce Partnerships is seeking a Rhode Island-licensed pharmacist to serve as a Pharmacy Technician Program Instructor for its workforce training program. This position combines classroom, laboratory, and online instruction with coordination of the student experience from program onboarding through classroom training, PTCE preparation, externship completion, certification, and state licensure.
The Instructor serves as a point of contact among students, instructional staff, program leadership, workforce partners, and pharmacy employers. The position supports consistent program delivery, student success, regulatory compliance, and positive completion and employment outcomes.
The program may include daytime and/or evening cohorts delivered through in-person, online, and hybrid formats. The successful candidate must maintain reliable attendance and fulfill both instructional and program responsibilities for all assigned cohorts.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive, and student-centered environment, engaging effectively with students of varied learning styles, cultures, identities, and life experiences.
Deliver classroom, laboratory, and online instruction in accordance with the approved curriculum and established program objectives.
Teach pharmacy calculations, pharmacology, pharmacy law, medication safety, prescription processing, compounding concepts, and other competencies required for entry-level pharmacy technician practice.
Prepare students for successful completion of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE).
Deliver instructional materials, assessments, laboratory activities, and student resources to reflect current pharmacy practice, certification standards, and employer needs.
Coordinate with other instructors and teaching assistants to promote consistency in curriculum delivery, grading, student expectations, and program policies.
Maintain accurate records related to attendance, grades, student progress, required documentation, externship hours, and program completion.
Identify students who may be at risk of not meeting academic, attendance, conduct, or program requirements; communicate concerns promptly and apply college policies fairly and consistently.
Provide individualized tutoring, academic support, remediation, and test-taking guidance as needed.
Guide students through applicable Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician I and Pharmacy Technician II licensure requirements, national certification procedures, and required documentation.
Assist program completers with the steps necessary to obtain or advance their pharmacy technician licensure after meeting certification requirements.
Promote professionalism, accountability, effective communication, and workplace readiness throughout the program.
Monitor student participation and completion of required externship hours and address placement concerns in collaboration with students, site representatives, and program leadership.
Obtain feedback from externship sites and employer partners to support program improvement and alignment with workforce needs.
Coordinate laboratory readiness, supplies, equipment, and safe instructional practices.
Track and report program outcomes, including attendance, completion, externship participation, certification, licensure, and employment information, as required.
Maintain familiarity with applicable Rhode Island regulations, certification requirements, and industry standards, and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to professional development.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy.
Current, unrestricted licensure as a pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island.
At least three years of professional experience as a licensed pharmacist.
Demonstrated experience teaching, training, precepting, mentoring, or supervising pharmacy personnel or adult learners.
Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency with instructional and administrative technology, including learning-management systems, Microsoft Office applications, email, presentation tools, electronic recordkeeping, and virtual meeting platforms.
Demonstrated ability to deliver instruction effectively in person and through online or hybrid learning platforms.
Ability to use creativity and flexibility in the classroom while following the approved curriculum and established program requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience in a postsecondary, workforce-development, healthcare-training, or pharmacy technician program.
Experience working effectively with adult learners and diverse student populations.
Community pharmacy experience.
Health-system pharmacy, sterile compounding, or IV preparation experience.
Familiarity with PTCB requirements and Rhode Island pharmacy technician licensure processes.
